First orthodontist appointment at 7 years old

First orthodontist appointment, when should your child have it? Orthodontic treatment most often begins between the ages of 10 and 12. Regardless, some orthodontic problems are easier to correct if they’re treated early.  If it appears that treatment will be needed, your orthodontist can advise you as to the ideal time to begin.

First orthodontist appointment: Choosing the Optimal Time for Treatment

By the age of 7, orthodontists can spot subtle problems with jaw growth and emerging teeth while some baby teeth are still present.  That’s important, because some orthodontic problems may be easier to correct if they’re found early.

Even if an orthodontist detects a dental or a jaw problem at an early age, it doesn’t mean that he’s going to recommend to start an orthodontic treatment immediately.  The orthodontist might choose to see your kid periodically until the timing is right.

If the orthodontist recommends to starting at an early age, fixed or removable appliances can be used.  This can prevent the development of more serious problems and can reduce the length of future treatment.

First orthodontist appointment at a young age

Here is a resume explaining why it’s important to consult an orthodontist at a young age:

  • Between age 3 and 6, kids normally only have baby teeth in the mouth.  Even if corrections would be made at this stage, they would probably disappear once adult teeth would arrive.
  • Between age 7 and 8, is the ideal time to start an orthodontic treatment because growth can be redirected and the correction can be stabilized with the permanent teeth.
  • It’s between age 10 and 12 that most orthodontic treatments are indicated.  Generally, 3 elements contributes to the success of the treatment at that age:

  1. the presence of all permanent teeth
  2. kids are usually in a period of growth
  3. patient are usually cooperative

It’s never too late to start an orthodontic treatment, except that the ideal timing to obtain the best result possible can only be determined by an orthodontist.
